Winter Freeze and Thaw Can Cause Problems for Your Roof

It has been a crazy winter so far for RJI Professionals!  And we still have a few months to go.  Have you noticed all the potholes in the road?  Well, obviously, the potholes are the result of the winter freeze and thaw we have been going through.

The rapid swings in temperature and excessive snowfall can wreak havoc on the asphalt roads and cause potholes and other serious issues.

What’s biggest asphalt thing in your life?

It’s your roof.

Every time you see or don’t see and hit a pothole, think of your roof.  It is often worth the preventative maintenance to have one of our roofing professionals get up there and take a look. We’ve carried out so much work on roofs that could have been avoided with some knowledge about roofs, and some preventative maintenance.

The continual winter freeze and thaw, means heating and cooling for your roof, which can causes ice dams which occur when accumulated snow on a sloping roof melts and flows down the roof until it reaches an area cold enough and then refreezes, typically at the eaves.

The ice forms in such a way that it often grows and “backs up” the roof, pushing its way under the shingles and damaging everything in its path.  This is a situation you obviously want to avoid, and so you’ll want to identify the first signs of this as soon as you can.

Remember, whether you dodge or ford those potholes, they may actually be doing you and your roof a big favor.

By reminding you to think of your roof.
