If you’re just getting over the winter and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of spring, then here are 10 spring home maintenance tips you can think about.
Here’s what we recommend.
1. Clean the gutters
You might have only just had someone out to clear your gutters, but once the snow and ice has gone, there may be damage that you couldn’t see before.
It’s a good idea to check the gutters themselves as well as the fixings.
Remember to take care, and if you don’t feel confident, then don’t attempt it.
2. Check your roof
Heavy snow and ice may well have taken their toll on your roof.
If you can’t get up on your roof, or don’t feel confident walking on a sloping roof, you can probably see everything you need to using binoculars.
Even though you might not be able to determine the exact extent of any damage to the slates, you’ll have an idea, and be able to let your professional roofing contractor know.
If you’ve seen slates in your garden, then you know there’s definitely some damage.
3. Check everything else on your roof
Look at the shingles, flushing, skylight and chimney too. Again, use binoculars if it’s safer and easier.
Perhaps you know that you’re missing shingles, or that your chimney is wobbly, or that there’s a crack in your skylight.
4. Check the siding and wall
Check the sidings and walls and look for stains. This often means that there is water damage.
Any weeds or other vegetation on your walls is a sign of water too, so you’ll definitely want to get
5. Check painted wooden surfaces
You’ll want to check any painted surfaces, and repaint where necessary.
Exposed wood can soon rot when it is exposed to moisture.
6. Check any wooden trim
Remember to check the wooden trim around doors and windows, and anywhere else on your home.
It might have been affected by snow or ice, or perhaps due to high winds or something banging into it.
Get any problems repaired or replaced as soon as you can to avoid further problems.
7. Trim overgrowth
Although it might seem a bit premature, you’ll want to trim any overgrowth so that it won’t affect your home.
Branches and leaves will drip water onto your roof, or perhaps on to the wooden frame of your windows.
Maybe there’s a bush that overhangs your garage, or a tree that could do with pruning.
Why not get on top of these jobs now, so that you don’t have to do them in the summer?
8. Service the AC unit ready for summer
Again, it might seem a bit premature, but why not get your AC unit serviced and ready for action.
If you do it now, you might even be able to find a cheaper deal as it’s out of season.
9. Check your garden equipment
Staying on the theme of getting prepared, why not check your garden equipment?
If there’s something that doesn’t work, or you can’t find the accessories you know you need when it comes to cutting the grass, you can get them now, instead of later.
In addition, you can get even more prepared and ensure the pool is ready for the first warm day of spring too.
10. Check your documentation is up to date
Now might also be a good time to make sure that your documentation is up to date, you know where it is, and you can access it wherever and whenever you need it.
Maybe you’ve changed insurance companies, or you’ve changed phones or moved house, and haven’t got everything you need on your phone.
Perhaps you’re using an online backup service to store your important information, and have a local copy as a PDF and as photos on your phone. This will mean that you can access the important policy details wherever and whenever you need them, whether you have an internet connection or not.
You might want to look at your Home Emergency Plan again too, and see if needs changing.
Perhaps you’ve got no idea what you’d be looking for if you went on your roof, or you know full well that you’re in no fit state to climb up ladders.
Maybe these are the sort of jobs that you’ll get round to when you get a minute or when you’re not busy with work or the kids.
We know that it’s far more convenient and often cheaper in the long run, to get the professionals in and get everything looked at the same time.
